Summary

We are seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the daily accounting functions for a key operating company within a large construction group serving the Southeast region.

This role is responsible for accurate financial reporting, project accounting, work-in-progress analysis, and ensuring internal controls are maintained.

The Controller will collaborate closely with senior leadership, project teams, and accounting staff to drive financial accuracy and process improvements in a dynamic, project-based environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for the assigned operating company, ensuring compliance with accounting policies and deadlines.
  • Prepare and review financial statements including management reports and supporting schedules in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Record and reconcile intercompany transactions and coordinate with peer controllers to support consolidated reporting.
  • Ensure general ledger accuracy through regular reconciliations, allocations, and supporting documentation.
  • Provide financial analysis on results, trends, project risks, and cash flow to senior leadership.
  • Support project accounting activities such as the monthly work-in-progress (WIP) process, reviewing assumptions and investigating margin trends.
  • Maintain accounting for government-funded projects including certified payroll, indirect costs, and audit support.
  • Assist in budgeting and forecasting for internal overhead departments, including variance analysis and cost control measures.
  • Account for joint ventures and multi-entity transactions ensuring partner billings, distributions, and profit allocations are accurately recorded.
  • Maintain internal controls over cash, payables, receivables, and financial reporting to ensure compliance and prevent fraud.
  • Coordinate external audits and tax filings by preparing schedules and providing entity-level information.
  • Monitor treasury activities such as cash forecasts, bank reconciliations, and working capital management.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and efficient team environment.
  • Utilize ERP and reporting systems effectively to produce accurate and insightful financial reports, enhancing process efficiencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including roles such as Controller or Senior Project Accountant.
  • Extensive experience in construction accounting, heavy highway, civil infrastructure, or project-based environments.
  • Strong knowledge of revenue recognition, WIP schedules, job costing, and project forecasting.
  • Proven ability in multi-entity consolidations, intercompany accounting, and complex reconciliations.
  • Deep understanding of U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and external audit processes.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial systems.
  • Leadership skills to supervise accounting teams and collaborate across departments.
  • Experience with government-funded projects and compliance standards is preferred.
  • CPA or CCIFP designation is a plus.
