Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Property Accountant to oversee financial reporting and accounting operations for a portfolio of multifamily properties.
This key role involves managing full-cycle accounting functions, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP, and supporting property management teams.
Reporting to a Finance Leader, the Senior Property Accountant plays a vital role in maintaining accurate financial records, facilitating audits, and providing insightful analysis to optimize property performance.
Responsibilities
- Manage full-cycle accounting for multiple third-party multifamily properties, including accounts payable, receivable, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
- Oversee month-end close processes by preparing journal entries, accruals, and reviewing general ledger details to ensure accuracy.
- Perform bank statement reconciliations timely, researching and resolving outstanding items to ensure data integrity.
- Collaborate with property managers to verify expense coding, rent roll reporting, and accrual submissions are completed correctly and promptly.
- Calculate and ensure depreciation accuracy in accordance with U.S. GAAP, maintaining fixed assets reconciliations.
- Review income statements and balance sheets, conducting variance analyses to identify discrepancies and ensure reporting accuracy.
- Prepare and distribute owner report packages efficiently and on time to support transparency and decision-making.
- Generate and analyze special reports as needed by management and property owners to support strategic planning.
- Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors during annual audits and tax filings, ensuring compliance and smooth processes.
- Support budgeting and forecasting activities at the property level to assist in financial planning.
- Manage cash flow reporting and fund distributions, ensuring timely debt payments and capital calls.
- Review aged payables for accuracy and efficiency, approving payments in alignment with company policies.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with property operations and support teams to meet organizational goals.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
- Minimum of 4–6 years of accounting experience, including at least 2 years in real estate or property management.
- Proficiency with Yardi property accounting software strongly preferred; experience with RealPage or MRI acceptable.
- Solid understanding of U.S. GAAP, especially as it applies to real estate accounting principles.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with internal teams and external owners.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to receive and apply professional feedback constructively.
