State and Local Tax Manager – Contract

State & Local Tax Manager (Contract) with a highly acquisitive multi-entity organization.
 

Summary

This assignment will start immediately, and is expected to last 12 months.

Responsibilities

• This SALT specialist will help reset and strengthen SALT processes, identify exposures, and improve documentation and training across the business.
• Perform a SALT risk assessment across state income/franchise and sales & use tax positions.
• Review prior-year/state & local filings in open years to identify and document exposure areas.
• Partner with the US Head of Tax and Federal Tax Manager to design and implement improved, scalable processes (preparation of returns are outsourced, so this role is heavy on assessment, review, and process improvement).
• Support state & local audits and contribute planning/mitigation ideas.
• Help create basic SALT training materials for operating companies (especially around sales tax).
• Nice to have: experience with state tax depreciation and fixed asset tools (specifically using Thomson Reuters Fixed Assets CS) to improve state depreciation tracking.
• Support a nexus and sales & use risk review (as applicable) and document planning and remediation ideas.
• Assist with state and local audits and develop practical planning ideas based on findings.

Requirements

• Bachelors degree or higher in Accounting required. Active CPA license a plus.
• Strong, hands-on depth in SALT income tax required, with solid exposure to sales & use tax being a plus.
• Proven ability to walk into a complex environment, find gaps, document risks, and implement practical fixes.
• Big 4 / large public accounting firm experience is a strong plus.
