Summary

The Senior Costing Analyst, reporting to the Costing Manager, plays a key role in supporting cost accounting, inventory valuation, and financial analysis within a manufacturing environment. This position ensures accurate product costing, monitors variances, and contributes to operational cost reduction efforts.

The role collaborates closely with the finance and operations teams to optimize manufacturing costs and improve financial insights. This is a hybrid, full-time position based at the company’s headquarters in Birmingham, AL. Reporting directly to the Costing Manager, the Senior Costing Analyst is instrumental in maintaining and refining the company’s costing processes to support strategic decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain product cost systems by setting up new manufactured products and ensuring accurate costing data.
  • Manage Bill of Materials (BOM) accuracy by conducting regular audits and tracking costs across raw materials, semi-finished, and finished goods.
  • Perform inventory valuation for raw materials and finished products, considering shelf-life and other relevant factors.
  • Conduct monthly product costing and variance analysis to identify cost-saving opportunities and monitor cost fluctuations.
  • Analyze and refine the Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) to support financial accuracy and operational efficiency.
  • Assess the financial impact of product design changes and raw material or production method modifications.
  • Oversee production settlement processes, ensuring SAP data accuracy and reconciling inventory and operations reports.
  • Support inventory accuracy initiatives by participating in physical counts and entering rework and missing batches into SAP.
  • Collaborate on manufacturing cost standardization efforts, including BOM and routing process improvements.
  • Develop and update costing standards for raw materials, labor, and overhead to maintain consistency across manufacturing.
  • Assist in budget planning and analysis related to manufacturing costs, overhead, and freight expense drivers.
  • Support special projects and perform financial analyses related to manufacturing efficiencies and cost-reduction strategies.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements within the costing and inventory systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in cost accounting, manufacturing finance, or equivalent roles.
  • Proven experience in a manufacturing or production environment with a focus on inventory valuation and cost analysis.
  • Strong proficiency in ERP systems such as SAP, with the ability to track costs and generate reports.
  • Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and data analysis functions.
  • Familiarity with BOM management, variance analysis, and inventory costing methodologies.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing execution systems (MES) or similar tracking tools.
  • Ability to analyze manufacturing variances and interpret complex financial data for diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently.
  • Strong communication skills to explain financial insights effectively.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to complete the pre-employment process successfully.
  • Power BI or other data visualization tools experience is a plus.
